The travelling season in Ladakh is short. During those months, local drivers work incredibly hard. The distances are long. The roads can be difficult. A working day can begin before sunrise and end many hours later. For visitors, it may be the journey of a lifetime. Leh can be beautiful. It can also be overwhelming. You arrive at around 3,500 metres. The air is different. Your body may slow down before your mind does. Then there are the distances. The cold. The high passes. The long roads. The silence. The scale of the mountains can make you feel very small. And perhaps that is part of what makes Ladakh so rewarding. You are taken out of your normal environment. Things that usually feel important can suddenly feel very far away. There are stretches of road where there is almost nothing around you except mountains, sky and silence. There are monasteries where nobody is asking you to do anything. There are mornings when you simply sit beside a lake at more than 4,000 metres and watch the light change. We don't want to tell anyone that travelling to Leh will change their life. Everyone experiences a place differently. But Ladakh creates the conditions for something unusual. The landscape is immense. The environment can be difficult. The culture is different. The pace becomes slower. One way to imagine the road. The first days stay in and near Leh, so the body can meet 3,500 metres before any high pass. The charm of this journey is the feeling of the road. Seven nights, four kinds of place. The first two nights and the last are in Leh, so arrival and departure stay gentle. Yes. Nubra, Pangong, and Tso Moriri need a permit. We arrange the papers in Leh the day before, with the identity document you travel on. There is no direct flight from Thailand. The way goes through New Delhi, then on to Kushok Bakula Rimpochee Airport in Leh. That last flight is about an hour. Look up Thailand to Leh. Then look at the two flights on their own: Thailand to Delhi, and Delhi to Leh. The separate search shows which leg has moved. Leh is about 3,500 m. On this journey the first day stays in town: rest in the morning, and only a short outing if you feel well. Lamayuru is the next day, still without a high pass. Chang La and the road to Nubra come after that. Drink water. A headache that will not ease is a reason to stay down and to go to SNM Hospital in town. We will take you. Nubra, Pangong, and Tso Moriri need a permit. Indian and foreign guests are handled differently, and the rule changes. We arrange the papers in Leh the day before, with the identity document you travel on. Lamayuru and the Indus monasteries do not need that permit.
